Ann Wilson May 28th 2017

River City Casino, St. Louis

With her compelling, dramatic soprano voice, Ann Wilson of Heart fame treated an intimate audience to a night of hits, cover tunes, storytelling, and more. After 40-plus years in the music business, her dynamic voice can still send chills up your spine and make your jaw drop. Many vocalists of her time period no longer possess the chops they had in their heyday. A mere handful of artists from the ‘70s and ‘80 s continue to hone their craft, and still have the talent that made them famous. Wilson is one who stands out among that crowd. This is one woman who still knows how to rock.

Opening her set with a scathing cover of The Who’s “The Real Me,” Wilson and her flawless four-piece band got off to a raging start. Though the venue is on the smaller side, attendance was almost to capacity. From cover tunes to her own mega-hits, Wilson still hits all the right notes in all the right places. Showcasing some new tunes, the artist still has the knack for songcrafting.

Vocally compelling, she brought new life to songs such as Elvis Presley’s “One Night with You,” the Black Crowes’ “She Talks to Angels,” and more—but I won’t give away all the surprises here. Suffice it to say that between Heart’s many chart-toppers and her cover selections, the combination made for a spectacular show. Her vocal delivery is on point and, as she is backed by a very talented band, the show is musically creative and enjoyable.

With grace, elegance, and a style all her own, the 66-year-old singer is still one of the beauties of rock. Once voted one of the Top 100 rock vocalists of all time (Hit Parader magazine, 2007), she has carved her niche in the rock and roll community, and will continue to influence young singers for many years ahead. | Marc Farr
